My heart was like the spring
Birds sang and children laughed
Flowers offered food to the bees
and Clouds were shaped like animals and her.
In summer, it was even more joyous
with gentle showers and rainbows
Young animals frolicked with no concern
and lovers embraced everywhere.
Kind autumn showed colors so bright and varied
that they were only matched by sunsets and dawns
even Orion and Cassiopaeia were brighter
and breezes sent aromas for all to smell.
Know this! My heart is now like winter
The coldness matching the frigid wind
Animals and flowers now dormant and hidden
and a snowy blanket covers my sorrow.
Oh I am the seasonal man,
Once seeded with spring-like love
and nurtured in summer warmth
Now an empty husk cast aside after harvest.

I have always been fascinated with love. Sometimes to a fault. I am intrigued by the interaction of the senses when two people fall in love and how it causes such unusual physical, emotional and spiritual responses. At the same time you feel exhilirated you may also feel melancholy. When that someone special walks into the room, your heart speeds up and your pulse quickens. You forget what was just on your mind. The world outside the two of you seems fuzzier, less distinct and far less important. All music suddenly becomes romantic. Okay, all of it except for Michael Jackson and Brittney Spears. And all of this occurs without the use of mind-altering substances. You may be driving and think of your favorite friend and suddenly your road rage seems silly. It is no longer a race to get where you are headed but more a form of mental foreplay while you anticipate your next meeting. When I have fallen in love in the past, my feet tend to settle about an inch above the ground, I can see cherubic figures firing cartoon arrows at me and there is some relaxing yet beautiful music in my ears. It sounds a little like Enya but without the subsequent depression. Although I will always love my ex-wife, as I will Shelley [especially Shelley], Kumiko, Carol, the other Carol and all of my other ex-loves, events became such that I no longer liked my wife. It broke my heart to have to file for divorce but I could not allow my spirit to be further broken. For now, I am still a fan of love but am unable to express that to someone special. Someday, after a reasonable mourning period, I hope to be able to again inflict myself on the women of the world and coerce one to sit comforatably on a sofa with a cup of something warm and leave the rest of the world behind for a few hours. If you are a fan of love, perhaps you want to read my "Dear Jenny" letter to an old love. "Dear John" (or in my case, "Dear Jenny") letters are one person ending a relationship with another by snail mail (eeyew!) instead of person to person. John is a common name but also suggests the writer does not remember or want to use his/her real name. It was the most difficult letter I ever had to write and I often feel a need to confess my cruelty. There are times when I find love in the most peculiar places and it sometime seems to be my primary focus when I watch the world. One of the more bizarre slants this puts on my life is when I watch movies. Not only when I see something intentionally romantic, but I even look for some romantic theme when I watch movies classified in other genre. I still get that warm feeling whenever I watch any of the movies below. Of course watching them with Scooter or another cat is not quite the same, especially when she gets bored and attacks my feet or coughs up a hairball. There are a number of movies I have pirated ... er purchased over the years that I find particularly good at making me want to cuddle. I have decided to review my favorites and hopefully someone else will discover what I found in them. Additionally, it gives me something to do after entering the hockey stats. Mind you, I am still in love with love between September and June but for some reason, my friends tend to avoid me during that time. They just mumble something about "staying out of the crease". And I never even played goal. The movies are listed alphabetically. Whether you agree or disagree about my particular bias {LOVE}, I hope you enjoy the film reviews and if you view them, the movies. Next to each title will be the NCAA rating assigned to the movie {as far as I can remember}. I will also try to point out when there is real/simulated sex, gory violence, etc. If you have other love movies to recommend, please e-mail me. {As long as it does not star Meg Ryan or Tom Hanks. Eeyew!}
This is a very disturbing film about a man and his love for his wife and child; a girl he never met and the truth. It stars Nicholas Cage and Jaoquin Phoenix. It depicts a private investigator who is engaged by a very rich woman to find out the identify of a girl in a snuff film she discovers after her husband dies. To find the girl, Cage must involve himself in the seedy world of adult pornography and enlists the aid of a clerk in an adult book store [Phoenix]. Will our protagonist solve the mystery before he becomes a victim of either the murderers or pornography? Obviously has nudity but instead of the expected sex deals more with sado-masochism and bondage. Return to movie list Altered States Altered States stars William Hurt and Blair Brown. While experimenting with a combination of sensory deprivation and hallucinogenic drugs, a college professor transforms into his genetic ancestor (Australopithicus) and only rediscovering the love of his wife can keep him from his feral state. Since he reverts to a predecessor of homo erectus, there are scenes of carnivorous activity and some violence. There are also scenes with nudity, simulated sex and drug use. Return to movie list An American Werewolf in London This story; starring David Naughton and Jenny Agutter is about an American student touring Europe after graduation. He is bitten by a werewolf in the Midlands and while he is recuperating in a London hospital, he falls in love with one of his nurses. As the full moon approaches, he is visited by his "Undead" travelling companion who tries to warn him about his newly acquired lycanthropic tendencies. He is released from the hospital and begins his nocturnal searches for meat. Will his love for Alex {Jenny} and her love for him be able to save him? This can be a confusing film as it intermingles gory violence with humor. As an example, EVERY song or music snippet has "moon" in the title. There is also nudity and simulated sex. Return to movie list An American Werewolf in Paris This is a follow-up to An American Werewolf in London. Sort of. It is not the same people who made the original but it was close enough. While bungee jumping across Europe with two friends; an American lad {Tom Everett Scott} saves a French jeune fille {Julie Delpy} from committing suicide when she jumps from the Eiffel Tower. When he attempts to find her and return her shoe, the three American boys are invited to a rave. The rave is actually a plan for the local werewolves to feast and the hero becomes a werewolf while one of his friends becomes undead. Can the love between the bungee jumper and the French lass {also a werewolf} allow him to return to normal and free the undead from their torment. As with the earlier movie, there are werewolf scenes with lots of blood and some brief nudity. Return to movie list Blade Wesley Snipes stars with Kris Kristofferson; in a movie about a man and his love for humanity and his quest to rid the world of vampires. I usually do not like Kris but he played a good mentor. Blade's mother apparently dies during his birth, having recently been bitten by a vampire. Snipes inherits many of the vampire traits while still retaining his humanity. Will he be able to save the world from evil before he completely tranforms into an vicious blood fiend? Novel special effects with bloody violence; great soundtrack and excellent martial arts demonstrations choreographed and performed by Snipes and others. I saw Blade II and Blade III as a courtesy but they were sequels. Return to movie list Blade Runner Harrison Ford and Sean Young pursue love a few centuries in the future. As a retired policeman who specialized in retiring androids, Decker {Ford} is called back into service when a group of Replicants evade capture and return to Earth. Rachel {Young} is a replicant who has had memory implants and does not realize she is artificial. Can Decker rediscover love and live happily with Rachel or will she have to be retired. Also stars Rutger Hauer, Brion James, William Sanderson, Joanna Cassidy, M. Emmet Walsh, Edward James Olmos and Daryl Hannah. {This is one movie where I enjoyed ALL of the actors/actresses.} Return to movie list Brainstorm Stars Natalie Wood {her last movie}, Christopher Walken and Louise Fletcher. A scientist and her assistant discover a technology that can allow users to experience others sensory input. It is intended for educational uses but the government attempts to use it for more devious purposes. Can the love be rekindled in their stale marriage {Walken and Wood} while upsetting the plans of the military. Contains brief nudity and simulated sex. Return to movie list Casablanca {Black and White} An obvious choice, I admit. Starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains with minor roles by Sidney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre; both of whom also appeared with Bogart in The Maltese Falcon; reviewed later. A cynical American {Bogart} runs a cafe in Casablanca during the second world war and is thrust in the middle of political intrigue when a leader of the resistance movement arrives looking for stolen papers which will allow him to flee to safety. His wife {Bergman} had a brief affair with Rick in Paris before the Germans invaded. She stood him up at the train station which led to his unhappy existance. Can their rekindled love erase the years of loneliness and despair and save the free world? Return to movie list Cat People Stars Nastassia Kinski, Malcolm McDowell, John Heard and Annette O'Toole. When an adopted woman is reuinited with her long lost brother, she begins working in the zoo and falls for the curator. After her brother confesses that their parents were not only man and wife but also brother and sister, she learns that his efforts to find her were so that he could find an appropriate mate to keep him from reverting to a leopard. Will her love with the curator be able to save her or is she doomed to tranform into a deadly cat and only mate with her sibling? Has graphic violence and nudity. Return to movie list The Crow Guitarist Eric Draven {Brandon Lee} and his fiance Shelly Webster {Sofia Shinas} are brutally murdered the night before their wedding as part of "Devil's Night", the night before Halloween. Some people believe that when you die, a crow carries you from the human world to the spirit world. Because their love for each other is so strong, the crow returns Eric to deal with the murderers. It raises the interesting question of whether love can survive even death. I have not seen the sequel or sequels. Return to movie list Dark City After waking in a hotel bathtub and then discovering a dead woman, a man tries to remember who he is. After recovering his wallet, he contacts his wife and begins to realize that the entire city is an experiment where an alien race mixes and matches memories so that no one can be sure who or what is real. The only thing our hero seems to be able to remember is his love for his estranged wife. Will the sun ever shine and will John Murdock be able to reunite with his wife? Good special effects and a great cast with Rufus Sewall, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt and Keifer Sutherland. David Warner is enjoyable as the leader of the alien invaders. Return to movie list The Day the Earth Stood Still Michael Rennie is a policeman from a federation of planets who visits Earth to warn them that their inability to find peace may be the cause of their destruction. He notes that soon Earth will discover a way to travel to space and to prevent them from bringing war to other planets, they face destruction. Before deciding whether or not to act, he disappears into Washington, D.C. to study why there is so much hate. He meets a widow {Patricia Neal} and her young son and realizes that love still exists among the hate. Will Earth be destroyed? The movie was originally intended to point out the stupidity of McCarthyism and the distrust of anyone who was not us. These are lessons that still seem to apply fifty years later. Return to movie list Electric Dreams A love story between a boy, a girl and a computer. Stars Virginia Madsen, Lenny Van Dohlen and Bud Cort {as the computer}. An architect needs some help scheduling his life and purchases a computer. An accident gives the computer a personality which helps our hero win the heart of the cellist who lives upstairs. The computer also falls in love with her. How will this love triangle be resolved? Excellent music by Giorgio Mroder, Culture Club and others. Return to movie list Fifth Element Bruce Willis is a retired Federation warrior who drives a cab in the far future. He is called back to duty to find stones which once protected the Earth from evil. To do this, he is assisted by a supreme being {Milla Jovovich} and a comical radio celebrity; Ruby Rod {Chris Rock}. Can the jaded Dallas Corbin {Willis} again find love and save the Earth from destruction? Brief nudity and violence and has an especially beautiful aria in the latter stages. Return to movie list Friends [No, not the annoying sitcom, the movie.] While escaping his overbearing father, future step relatives, a young man {Sean Bury} escapes to southern France with his French girlfriend {Anicee Alvina}; who is running away from her sister. They set up housekeeping in a small cottage near Arles {France} and try to make a life for themselves. Paul and Michelle have a child and try to find a way to survive. Will Paul's father find his son and return him to London or will they live happily. The soundtrack includes music by then unknowns Elton John and Bernie Taupin. This was/is a controversial film because it depicts nudity of minors. It also was accused of mocking the Church in wedding and baptism ceremonies. W A R N I N G! There is a really HORRIBLE sequel called Paul and Michelle released years later. Do not spoil the mood by renting that one. Return to movie list The Fringe Dwellers - R It was difficult to decide which love was most important in this story, a young aboriginal womans love for her people or herself. Disgusted with the life her parents and other indies {indigenous people} have accepted, a girl plans to leave the outback for a career in Sydney. A brief dalliance with a local boy results in her becoming pregnant and her plans are interrupted. Will Trilby accept the role of mother and settle in shanty town or will she continue on her quest for freedom? This can be a depressing film for several reasons. The primary one is how the native people are forced to accept a substandard existence to keep the invaders wealthy and in power. Recent events in my own state remind me that this type of feudal system is still alive and well on several continents. Return to movie list The Golden Child Eddie Murphy plays a man who searches for lost children. He is skeptical when he is approached by a Tibetan {Charlotte Lewis} to help find the Golden Child; a spiritual leader who is destined to save the earth from itself. As the two evade evil forces and try to find the kidnapped child, they fall in love. Will their love be able to keep the child from being murdered and hold evil at bay? Mild violence. Return to movie list Gorgeous A young woman in a small fishing village in Taiwan finds a love note in a bottle. Taken with the romantic tone of the message, she flies to Hong Kong to find the love-struck man. She discovers that the note was intended for the writer's gay lover but ends of saving a local business tycoon from thugs. She poses as the missing girlfriend of a local gangster in hopes of impressing him. Can she bring love into the life of the solitary rich man? The movie stars the multi-talented Shu Qi who is G o r g e o u s and always a pleasure to watch. It also stars Jackie Chan who has numerous scenes of kung fu, most notably with an American kick boxer, and with the henchmen of his life-long competitor. Mr. Chan produced the film and I'd say it's one of his best. Return to movie list Johnny Mnemonic In a future where many people are dying from NAS; a nerve disorder; a data courier named Johnny [Keannu Reeves] accepts a job to transport twice as much data as his implanted hard drive can hold. As he escapes from Beijing to New Jersey he runs into serious trouble with the Yakuza. He is rescued and falls in love with a bodyguard named Jane [Dina Meyer]. It seems that all that is wanted is his head. As he seeks help in retrieving the data before seepage kills him, he discovers that Jane is suffering from NAS. Can their love allow him to find the cure and keep his head? Also has excellent performances from Ice 'T', Tim Rollins and Tab Hunter. Contains violence and partial nudity. Return to movie list The Last Samurai Captain Nathan Algren {Tom Cruise}, resorts to alcohol to numb the pain of his dishonor after murdering men, women and children for the crime of not being white. He is approached by his former commander and the Japanese government to train an Imperial army. The young emperor, fascinated by the New World has decided that the Samurai, an honorable and spiritual people, are no longer needed and are to be eliminated for their aversion to the new culture. His troops are sent into battle too early and are soundly defeated by the Samurai and Algren is captured. The leader of the Samurai, Katsumoto {Ken Watanabe} is intrigued by the Captain and over time, each learns much from the other about honor and war. Captain Algren realizes that it is his duty to join the Samurai and oppose the Emperor. Will he win the heart of Taka {Koyuki}, Katsumoto's sister and widow of a warrior Algren slew in battle, and live peacefully or will the Emperor complete his mission to eliminate the Samurai? It has lots of blood, if that pleases or disturbs you, but is none the less a very beautiful and sad movie. My friend Yumiko convinced me to see this movie and I am eternally grateful. Return to movie list Logan's Run Stars Michael York and Jenny Agutter. York plays a sandman; a policeman who exterminates anyone who runs from Carousal. In this future, no one lives beyond thirty unless renewed. As part of a secret assignment, Logan is aged to thirty and must enlist the aid of Agutter for assistance in escaping death. Will their love allow them to live beyond thirty? Also stars Farrah Fawcett, Roscoe Lee Brown {as BOX} and has an excellent performance by Peter Ustinov as 'Old Man'. Contains brief nudity and mild violence. Return to movie list The Maltese Falcon - Black and White I realize that this is also a classic and stars Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Sidney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre and Ward Bond [not to mention Elisha Cook, Jr.] but I do not feel any movie listing is complete without it. After his partner is killed assisting a woman, Sam Spade [Bogart] is drawn into a web of lies and deceit while falling for his beautiful client. He discovers that many people are all searching for the same medieval relic, which is invaluable. At the same time he is protecting his client/girlfriend he must fight off numerous criminals and also the police and district attorney. What will become of the love he feels for his newly found acquaintance and who will end up with the priceless bauble? Return to movie list The Matrix John Anderson [Keannu Reeves] is a computer programmer who spends his evenings surfing the Internet and trying to track down some of the more famous hackers because he feels there are things in life that are not as they appear. He is contacted by Trinity [Carrie-Ann Moss] and is told to meet her at a bar where she will introduce him to Morpheus [Lawrence Fishburn], the most wanted hacker. He is offered a chance to return to his mundane life or learn the truth about the world. After he decides to find out what truths Morpheus offers, he learns that humans have been sleeping while machines with artificial intelligence have taken over the world. While combatting the computer generated world everyone believes real, he falls in love with Trinity. Will their love be able to save Morpheus and the rest of the world? Also stars Hugh Wearing as Agent Smith and Joe Pantaliano as Cypher . Good special effects and a great soundtrack that includes Marilyn Manson, Prodigy and Rage Against the Machine. I appear to be in the minority by not enjoying either part II or part III. The love story seemed to disappear amid all the technology. ? ? Return to movie list The Quiet Man After he kills another boxer, an American {John Wayne} moves to Ireland and settles near his ancestors birthplace. Immediately, he is at odds with the local laird {Ward Bond} while falling in love with his sister {Maureen O'Hara}. Both men argue over a small piece of land and it is only a matter of time before they come to blows. Can his new found love help him forget his past and settle quietly in the countryside? This was one of the first films to use Technicolor and the Irish scenery alone is worth the two hours of viewing {it won the Academy Award for cinematography}. I abhor westerns, war movies and John Wayne in general. So it is difficult to admit how much I enjoy the film. Return to the movie list The Railway Children This is a story of a love between a daughter and her father nicely adapted from the novel by E. Nesbitt at the turn of the last century. When a man is falsely accused and imprisoned, his family must move to a county home and get used to life without a father or hired help. They befriend many of the villagers and eventually get the assistance of the railway owner. Will her father again be with his family? Stars Jenny Agutter. [Something tells me that I might enjoy ANY movie she is in.] A BBC remake, shown on P. B. S. in the United States, starred Ms. Agutter in the role of Mother and is worth seeing if you can find it. It did not approach the original in quality but is watchable because of Ms. Agutter. Return to movie list Romeo and Juliet For too many years to admit, I nearly cried at the end of Romeo and Juliet. The version with Olivia Hussey and Richard Whiting was very well performed and gave us 'Love Is Blue' [which I liked the first half-million times I heard it]. However, the more recent version with Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio did bring tears to my eyes. Although they were true to the dialogue and characters, the setting has been changed from medieval Venice to Verona Beach, California in the modern day. Seeing the movie modernized somehow made me better able to identify with the star-crossed lovers. I have also seen some tragedy in my life and the aura of the film reminded me of how many of my companions are no longer alive. Also stars Brian Denehy, Paul Sorvino and in an unusual serious role, John Leguizamo. Has some gunfights and if you stretch your imagination or understand Middle English [dying], simulated sex. Return to movie list Slap Shot Stars Paul Newman, Strother Martin, U.N.H. hockey star Michael Ontkean, Swoozie Kurtz, M. Emmet Walsh and a number of minor league players. This is the story of an aging hockey player whose love for the sport caused the end of his marriage. His manipulation of the players and media in an effort to keep the game alive for himself and others leads to a plan to make them champions. Will his love for hockey win over economics and age? For those who have seen the beer commercials with the Hanson Brothers [Okay boys, take it outside!], they were introduced in this film. It is a hockey film made in the early seventies so of course there are fights, lots of beer, fights, scantily clad women and fights. For hockey fans, the Charlestown Chiefs were loosely based on the Johnstown Chiefs and other teams in the East Coast Hockey League. There is a recent sequel with Stephen Baldwin, Jessica Steen, David Hemmings, Gary Busey and of course, the Hanson brothers [Jeff Carlson, David Hanson and Steve Carlson]. I was reluctant to rent this as it is always a bad sign when a movie goes directly to video. I was pleasantly surprised. This time, it is not violence but money that threatens the game ["Ain't it the truth"]. Can Baldwin and his band of misfits save the game from becoming nothing more than entertainment? The love story, as above, is for the pure game of hockey. Return to movie list Snow Walker Based on the wondrous Canadian book by Farley Mowat (Walk Well, My Brother), the movie details the events in the life of a bush pilot in northern Canada in the fifties. While attempting to trade for ivory, a young pilot is tasked with taking an ill Inuit girl to a hospital. Or so he thinks. Not long after heading for the white world, the plane crashes and the two go on an quest for survival. Kanaalaq {Annabella Piugattuk} and Charlie {Barry Pepper} set out together to find a way to their destinations. But the young pilot does not realize his path has been chosen for him by the spirits. He soon realizes that Kanaalaq has consumption (tuberculosis) and eventually realizes that it is his fate to guide her to the spirt world and return to her village to tell her family of her passing. Setting aside the beautiful scenery and ample snow, the love story between two strangers who become siblings is a heartwarming tale. Also stars James Cromwell and Jon Gries whom I've enjoyed since Real Genius. Note! There are a few graphic scenes where Kanaalaq teaches Charlie about hunting and the various uses of the meat, sinew, etc. Return to movie list Spitfire Grill This movie has several love stories. One is a love story of how the heroine learns to appreciate the rural life of Maine but my ex-wife felt her romance with a local handyman is more relevant. Additionally, a mother's love for her long lost son is also prominent. When a female convict is released from a Maine prison, she takes a job as a live-in assistant at an old restaurant. The owner decides to hold a raffle and sell the restaurant, but the money disappears and the ex-con is thought to be guilty. Will her love for the handyman and the town be enough to prove her innocence? Ellen Burstyn is the major star of this and receives a passing grade for her ability to speak Yankee, my preferred dialect at home, {although few others in the movie do}. If you are not reaching for the tissues at the end of this one, check your pulse .. TWICE. Return to movie list Star Trek - Resurrection While trying to capture an apparently malfunctioning Data {Brent Spiner}, Capt. Jean-Luc Picard {Patrick Stewart} discovers a planet with people who do not seem to age. He and his crew try to save them from renegade Star Fleet officers and evil invaders and Picard falls in love with one of the leaders {Donna Murphy}. Will Picard understand how little time means when love is present? Includes the rest of the 'Next Generation' cast was well as Anthony Zerbe and F. Murray Abraham. [I know this is a stretch but I've been a trekker since the original series aired so I had to include at least one of them.] Return to movie list Streets This is a moving and sad film about a few days in the life of a couple of runaways in Los Angeles. A boy from Santa Barbara is thrown together with a teenage hooker and they become the targets of a serial killer. It can be disturbing to see one child concerned with his stolen wallet and another injecting heroin so she does not have to be concerned with anything. As the two evade the murderer, they fall in love. Will the two be able to vanquish the killer and find true love? This was a movie I nearly passed up; even with reliable recommendations. Her previous role was the trampish and ditzy daughter of a shoe salesman. However, Christina Applegate was convincing as an illiterate orphan who tried to project a rough demeanor and yet elicited pity and anger. Contains violence, brief nudity and simulated sex. Another one where you will probably want the tissues handy. Return to movie list The Thin Man A wealthy socialite marries a former police detective and when they return to New York to celebrate their nuptials, they are approached to look into a series of murders by an acquaintance. Can the murderer be found and his motives for killing three different people be revealed? Stars William Powell and Myrna Loy. Most of the entertainment to me is the interplay between Nick and Nora Charles [Powell and Loy]. Return to movie list Time After Time Stars Malcolm McDowell, Mary Steenburgen and David Warner. Another movie I nearly passed up when it was released because the plot involves Jack the Ripper escaping into the future in a time machine created by H. G. Wells. However, the interaction between Steenburgen and McDowell is very believable [they were or soon would be married] as is David Warner as Jack the Ripper. After Wells follows Dr. Leslie Stevenson [the ripper] into the future, he meets Steenburgen while exchanging money. Soon, a new series of murders begin in San Francisco and McDowell has no choice but to track down Dr. Stevenson and convince him to return home. Will the love between McDowell and Steenburgen be enough to vanquish the ripper and allow them to find an appropriate time? Has some gory violence. Return to movie list Toys I found this strange movie as the only one to date that I could watch that stars Robin Williams. This tale is one of the love between a brother and sister who inherit a toy company. When a retired general {their uncle} takes over as general manager, the toys seem to become more violent and a deeper plot is discovered. Can the siblings love for each other and their family dream triumph over the evil war-mongers? Also has excellent performances by Joan Cusack and LL Cool J. Return to movie list To Kill a Mockingbird - Black and white This is an excellent adaptation of a great novel starring Gregory Peck, Brock Peters and a young Robert Duvall. It was the only novel by the reclusive Harper Lee and is somewhat autobiographical. The narrator is a young girl and the film describes her love for her {single-parent} father and his love of justice. Along with several childhood adventures, it shows the prejudice that was all too evident in a rural town in the early half of the previous century and how difficult it was to defend an innocent black man. I was once blessed with the honor of stopping by her favorite restaurant table to personally apologize for being a Yankee. (^o^) Return to movie list Underworld - R This film wanted to use Vampires and Werewolves as surrogates for the Montagues and the Capulets {Romeo and Juliet, reviewed above}. It was successful but seemed to drag near the end. However, for the few male readers of this page, Kate Beckinsale ... in leather. Return to movie list Walkabout - R This is a story of unrequited love between an Australian aboriginal boy and a Sydney schoolgirl. After they are stranded in the outback by their father, a young woman [Jenny Agutter again?] and her brother are befriended by an aboriginal who is on a 'walkabout' or male coming of age ritual. Since they are unable to communicate, they travel together although they are seeking different destinations. Will their journey bring love or disaster. May have brief nudity. The original movie had cut it but a subsequent release a few years later included those scenes. Return to movie list Whale Rider - PG When the first-born child in a Maori family {indigenous of New Zealand} turns out to be a girl, the rangatira {chief} is discouraged. He tries to ignore his grand-daughter and forbids her from accepting her duties since his belief is that only a male may be leader. Pai {Keisha Castle-Hughes} developes a love for her grandfather, Koro {Rawiri Paratene} and her people in spite of it. When the tribe is threatened, who will lead them back from disaster? I enjoyed this movie so much that I took a friend to see it just a few days later. I seem to remember her thanking me for bringing tissues! (^o^) Return to movie list Witness - R John Book {Harrison Ford} is a Philadelphia police officer who investigates a murder witnessed by a young Amish boy. His mother {Kellie McGillis} is unhappy to be delayed on her journey and to have to assist in the outside world. When a deeper plot is uncovered, Book returns the two to the Amish community and is nursed to health from a bullet wound he suffered. As he recuperates, he becomes enamored with the widowed McGillis. Can love survive in these different worlds? Danny Glover plays a good bad guy in this movie. Beautiful music by Michael Jarre. Has gun violence and brief nudity. Return to movie list

the parting
Like the sun that brings light and hope,
she came from the east.
The clouds in the sky were chased by her warmth
and my tears were dried like dew
leaving the grass on a summer morning.
We were not the same and yet we were.
Our language was from the heart so distance and
culture and religion seemed meaningless.
But then she refused to shine. The clouds returned
and in solitude, I shed my sadness.
My aches are silent and unnoticed, like teardrops
shed in rain.
